Cape Town
The Mother City with the stately Table Mountain as a backdrop is surely one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Things to see & do in Cape Town:
- Travel to the top of Table Mountain in the revolving cable car (Closed on account of inclement weather or high winds). Return adult ticket price - R130.
- Visit the popular V&A Waterfront with its many shops, restaurants and other forms of entertainment. It is also here where you will find the world class Two Oceans Aquarium.
- Take a ferry ride out to Robben Island, the island best known as a prison island and its most famous inmate was Nelson Mandela. Tours depart from the Clock Tower in the V&A Waterfront at 9am, 10am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm. Tours cost R150 per person.
- Spend a day travelling to Cape Point, the point where many believe to be the meeting point of the cold Atlantic ocean and the warmer Indian ocean (Entrance to Cape Point Nature Reserve - R55 per person). Be sure to stop at Boulders Beach, a large breeding colony of African penguins(Entrance R25 per person).
- Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are well worth a visit with its wonderful indigenous South African plants - entrance R30 per person.
Johannesburg & Pretoria
From humble beginnings Johannesburg has grown to be not only South Africa's financial hub but also the most powerful city in Africa. Pretoria is South Africa's administrative capital and is located only 50 kilometres from Johannesburg.
Things to see and do in Johannesburg & Pretoria:
- Enjoy a tour of Soweto, Johannesburg and South Africa's largest township. Visit Vilakazi Street the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners have lived, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The Hector Pietersen memorial as well as the Apartheid Museum are also worth a visit.
- Gold Reef City Themepark is a popular way to see how Johannesburg looked like in the early part of the 1900s. You can also travel down the old gold mine and see gold being poured.
- Visit some of Johannesburg's shopping malls with Sandton City and Rosebank being the most popular.
- The highlight in Pretoria are the stately Union Buildings which were designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbet Baker.
- Another attraction is the Voortekker Monument located on the outskirts of Pretoria.
Durban
One of South Africa's most important harbour cities. It is also a popular destination for those looking for fun in the sun.
Things to see and do in Durban:
- Visit Ushaka Marine World with its wonderful aquarium and water themepark.
- The Indian Market is a colouful experience one should not miss.
- The Golden Mile along Durban's beachfront is full of restaurants and other attractions.
- Visit Umhlanga Rocks 20 minutes north of Durban with its beautiful beach, Gateway Shopping Centre and the Natal Sharks Board.
Port Elizabeth
"The Friendly City" is situated on the South Eastern coast of South Africa and offers the traveller a wide range of activities.
Things to see and do in Port Elizabeth:
- Port Elizabeth has some beautiful beaches with Hobie, Humewood and King's Beach being the most popular.
- The dolphinarium is a popular attraction for both young and old.
- Boardwalk Entertainment complex near the beachfont is home to many restaurants, shops and a casino.
